Barbara Parker, "The Perfect Fake"

Last night I went to Books & Books in Coral Gables to attend a book signing with Barbara Parker for her new book "The Perfect Fake".

All in all it was a good event and it was presented in conjunction with the Historical Museum of Southern Florida. Barbara spoke a little bit about her writing process and told some interesting anecdotes from her time researching the novel. My favorite quote from the evening was, "No one ever writes a book by themselves." She was refering directly to the collaborative nature of her research on her various novels, and that statement really struck a chord with me, especially in light of my involvement with Ink 'n Doodles Creative Workshop and the writing of my own novels.

Here are some pictures from the event (sorry for the low quality... they were taken with my phone).

Look! Alex's new home office!

Admit it... you wish you were MacGyver

Deathly Hallows

It's official! The final installment of the Harry Potter series now has a title:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The BBC reports:

Author JK Rowling has revealed the title of the seventh and final Harry Potter book.
It will be called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The announcement was made on the writer's official website.
Despite the publication date not being known, the book is tipped to be a big seller, like the rest in the series.

This week Rowling revealed how she has gone back to writing in cafes - as she did 13 years ago when starting to write about the boy wizard.
She has also admitted how she has been dreaming of the character.
Writing on her website she described it as an "epic dream" where she was Harry and the narrator simultaneously.

In a recent web posting, she said she has been working hard on the last book.
"I'm now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more," she said.
She also described feeling "alternately elated and overwrought" at writing it and joked she cannot decide if she wants to finish it or not.

Don't they look cute?
Living down here in Miami-North Havana, we tend to pay more attention to all things Cuban and often forget that the kids also have a Mexican heritage.
Here they are in their traditional Charro outfits. Thanks Grandma!

Yep... that's a big Elephant!

We went to the zoo this weekend.
Check out some pics on Flickr.

It is amazing how, no matter how many times we visit the zoo, they always find something new to be amazed about. Even as we were leaving they were asking if they could come back after their nap!

The Great Cuban Exaggeration!

Take a look at this meal (about the same price as a Quarter Pounder w/cheese Meal)...

Oh, by the way, I measured the steak.... 16 inches! Size does matter!
